ABSTRACT

The results of the studies on the possibility of obtaining valuable substances from the biomass of blue-green algae (BGA) that cause the “blooming” of natural surface waters and artificial reservoirs (Ukraine) were presented. The problem of clearing water bodies from BGA excess was considered from the viewpoint of processing biomass containing substances that are valuable for medical, pharmaceutical, and perfumery spheres. In this chapter, an actual scientific and practical task was posed – to determine the ways to extract hyaluronic acid (HA) from the biomass of BGA as its natural component. It was shown that cyanobacteria of natural waters, Microcystis aeruginosa, and cyanobacterial actinomycete associations are the main source of HA in natural waters and artificial reservoirs. The technology of extracting HA was developed and confirmed experimentally.
