ABSTRACT

The development of advanced and efficient technology for energy production is gaining interest throughout the world. With the increase in population and changes in climatic conditions, the natural energy sources are diminishing day by day, therefore microbial fuel cell (MFC) development can lighten the world through the production of green energy. This chapter is aimed to provide information about the basics of microbial fuel cells, their architecture, and development processes in detail. It also highlights the biowaste-based microbial fuel cell which developed in recent years. MFC-based technology served two purposes i.e. power production and wastewater treatment. Hydrogen production, bioremediation, dye decolorization, and desalination are some of the wide applications of microbial fuel cells.
