ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to outline the operational tools and techniques for waste management with a focus on municipal solid waste (MSW). Given the increasing population and urbanization, the generation of MSW is rapidly increasing in both developed and developing countries. Therefore, the management of MSW is exposed to manifold challenges. To address these challenges, there are various methods for effective waste management even though the application of each of the methods may have advantages and disadvantages. This chapter is divided into six sections. First, the chapter provides an introduction and background. Second, a short brief on the composition of solid waste in the global context is provided. Third, a short overview of the minimization hierarchy of solid waste management with techniques is covered. Fourth, operational tools and techniques for waste management are identified and reviewed with advantages and disadvantages. Fifth, the experience of developed countries with MSW is provided. This is followed by the conclusion.
