ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information on the production of energy from municipal solid waste (MSW). Given the limited stock of fossil fuel and the negative impact of burning fossil fuel on climate, renewable energy is now a key focus all over the world. The MSW is one of the key sources of renewable energy in addition to hydro, solar, wind, and thermal. While many developed countries are producing energy from MSW, there is a potential for generating energy from MSW in developing countries. In this chapter, first, a literature review is provided on the MSW generation. Second, the potential for energy production from MSW has been described. Third, the best available technologies are described for the generation of energy along with their advantages and disadvantages. Fourth, the lessons learned from the best practices are presented along with the avenues for adopting low-cost and innovative technologies in developing and emerging economies. Finally, conclusions are drawn.
