ABSTRACT

Microalgae are a very important bioresource in Nigeria. There are many species of microalgae growing in various ecological zones in Nigeria. These species have various applications in medicine, industries, food, and agriculture as well as in environmental monitoring and conservation. Unfortunately, there is very limited research on microalgae biotechnology in Nigeria. Although many microalgae species have been isolated from various ecological zones in Nigeria, they have not yet been comprehensively documented. Furthermore, most of the potentially useful isolates are discarded/lost due to lack of functional microalgae collection centres. Although many species of microalgae are commercially cultivated in many countries in the world, there is yet no microalgae industry in Nigeria. For us to exploit the potentials of microalgae in Nigeria, there is a need for intensive research and development in microalgae biotechnology. This chapter highlights the potential applications of microalgae, the need for active research, and commercial cultivation of microalgae in Nigeria for various applications.
