ABSTRACT

Industrialization, urbanization, and other indiscriminate activities of human beings are the leading cause of environmental deterioration. Increasing pollution has now become the greatest threat to all life forms and environments. Currently, researchers have come up with different technologies and ways to control this growing pollution problem. They are merging technological advances with nature to pave the way for combating monstrous pollution. It is already apparent that trees and shrubs are efficient at controlling and managing various kinds of pollution. Genome editing of plants to control environmental pollution is an unexplored yet highly promising area of research to increase the remediation capacity of plants. Chapter 13 aims to present a comprehensive review of the status and applications of genome-editing strategies applied to different means of plant-based remediation and novel technologies. Since the genome editing of medicinal plants to reduce pollution is in research, the issues and challenges to be addressed are also recognized.
