ABSTRACT

The preventive aspect of Ayurveda emphasizes on the fact that, becoming healthy and being thus is the best decision anyone can make. But in the process, one may slow down when incurred with hurdles in the form of communicable diseases as well as lifestyle diseases like obesity, type-2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular ailments. While the former need social co-operation, the latter needs only self-awareness and adaptation of better lifestyle modifications. Obesity being one of the most commonly faced lifestyle disorder among the world population, is dealt in this chapter. Ayurvedic literature describes the same as “sthoulya” which has it’s own set of causative factors, pathogenesis, symptoms, and treatment protocol. Each of these points has been comprehensively mentioned below aided with the citations from long established scriptures like Charaka Samhita, Susruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam. Obesity may have either primary or secondary origin nevertheless needs physical as well as mental therapy. The subsequently referred role of psyche, rejuvenation and daily routines are tectonic towards improving the quality of life. On the whole, this chapter gives a clearer picture of the ailment along with paving an insight to it’s management.
