ABSTRACT

Inflammation triggers a varied assortment of physiological and pathological progressions. More recent evidence suggests that a much broader range of diseases have divulging markers for inflammation. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an inflammatory arthritis that distresses nearly 1% of the world’s adults. The drugs frequently in use for the treatment of RA include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, corticosteroids, and biologic response modifiers. These managements exert anti-inflammatory actions with severe adverse effects. As a consequence, alternative treatments based on medicinal plants and natural plant products are becoming increasingly popular in India, US, and other countries. In the light of this remark, Justicia gendarussa, a medicinal plant, which is widely used for the treatment of inflammation and rheumatic diseases in folk medicine, was selected for this study to investigate its antirheumatic potential. This chapter converses about the antirheumatic efficacy of Justicia gendarussa on chronic arthritic models. Through this work, the beneficial potential of Justicia gendarussa was explored and this may provide a novel approach in anti-inflammatory research. This chapter is a result of me and my PhD guide’s interest in inflammation and anti-inflammatory agents. This book may provide additional 112knowledge about the design and development of new drug delivery systems potentially useful in the treatment of chronic inflammatory-based diseases.
