ABSTRACT

The use of learning analytics (LA) is growing in popularity. In this chapter, we discuss how this trend has reshaped the landscape of STEM education in terms of data collection, analysis, and interpretation. We first synthesize the use of learning analytics in STEM contexts with the primary aim of understanding how and in what ways learning analytics has been enabling a paradigm shift in STEM education. Particular emphasis is placed on the advancement of data collection techniques, the expansion of data analysis methods, and the emergence of innovative visualization strategies. We then introduce a theory-driven learning analytics model, which has the potential to further promote the evolution of STEM education and research. We present an example study to illustrate how theory-driven learning analytics can be applied into practice in a STEM learning context. We close the chapter by discussing the future trends of learning analytics in STEM education.
