ABSTRACT

The holistic idea of this chapter is to impart a conceptual understanding about Artificial Intelligence (AI) stemming from the basic notion of intelligence, its role and need in our daily life, and its necessity in business and education. AI has been part of our lives for a very long time and has now very subtly integrated into our daily lives to such an extent that we can now in many ways work efficiently only with the aid of this intelligence. Recent years have seen a gradual paradigm shift from traditional education systems to outcome-based education systems. The contributions of AI-based systems in outcome-based education is significant to impart customized experience to various teaching-learning groups. Moreover, in this era of Covid-19, where education throughout the globe has been imparted online, the process can be more effectively handled by adding the flavor of AI. Our perspective in this chapter is to focus on scope, applications, and the future of AI in education. The chapter discusses the importance of incorporating AI from the educators’ point view and from the students’ perspective as well. We will see that some routine administrative tasks like assessments, which otherwise consume lot of time, can be effectively and efficiently done with the aid of AI. One of the main concerns educators are facing today is “knowing their students”—differentiating between fast and slow learners and identifying students requiring additional help in learning. AI can answer these concerns to a great extent. The quality of conducting online assessments and proctoring can also be enhanced by methodical use of AI. AI-based proctoring is capable of detecting unwanted voice and movement around students. This feature can bring about fairness in online examination processes. With the help of AI, students can have easy access to virtual learning content as per their inclination, aptitude, and requirement. It will be shown that with the help of AIdriven systems, students can take mock tests multiple number of times by selecting the appropriate difficulty levels, topics, duration and so on. Any advancement in science and technology is always accompanied by ethical issues and concerns. AI being no exception has its own set of moral apprehensions. These issues are discussed briefly towards the end of the chapter.
