ABSTRACT

Active and smart techniques, bioactive techniques, edible coatings, and bioplastic, biodegradable, and sustainable packaging, edible packaging, and nanotechnology are new trends in the food packaging systems. These novel technologies are not only serving the basic function of containment but also can increase the food quality and margin of shelf-life of foods. This chapter discusses the fundamentals of food packaging, and recent trends in edible and alternative food packaging technologies.
