ABSTRACT

Error is a part of being human and can almost be considered as ‘normal’. This chapter discusses human factors and their application, including various methods to help reduce error and promote better team working and morale. It discusses the factors that affect individual performance including hunger, hydration, emotional state and tiredness. Both commercial and military aviation recognise how tiredness and fatigue can influence personal performance and increase the likelihood of accidents and as a result, there are rules in place for maximum work hours. Hydration, nutrition and individual recovery are often overlooked areas of HF but are crucial in the operating theatre to maintain performance. Powerful emotions such as anger or upset can easily interfere with decision making, especially when trying to perform a task that requires intense concentration.
