ABSTRACT

The basic objective of this research was to assess the impact of communication technologies on personal relationships, specifically friendship relationships. In-depth interviews of 17–24 years old boys and girls living in the Kolkata metropolitan area having at least one active social networking site profile were conducted. The interviews were analyzed by using phenomenological research methodology. In recent years function of the internet has changed considerably for adolescents. There are now various online tools available for communication. Among these, social networking sites (SNSs) have emerged as the most important platform for connecting people. The SNSs are changing the nature of social relationships in an unprecedented way. One such networking site, namely, Facebook, emerged as an important site of doing friendship because of its popularity among adolescents in India.
