ABSTRACT

The study deals with the utilization of information technology (IT) in transforming the society into a Digital Society. It highlights the revolution brought by communication technology which managed to introduce flexibility in government work. As globalization is defined as social, political, and economic interconnection between different countries, technologies are used to maintain this interconnectivity. Technology, specifically Information and communication technologies have been used to reduce the differences and inequalities from different corners and transform the society into an integrated whole which is often referred to as “global village.” Encouraging new communication technologies in government services is known as electronic governance. The traditional notion of public administration seems to become obsolete as the government at various levels is having the demand of more modern and improved quality of governance. E-governance has acceptability all over the world for its transparency and accountability. E-Governance is considered as an indispensable strength to a revolutionary development in the efficacy of government. The chapter analyzes the impact of e-governance in the public administration of India. The focus of the study is on the role of e-governance and the main obstacles in the universal implementation of the program. In India, with a huge population, low level of literacy, and increasing level of diversity, it is difficult to run the administration by the government in the traditional way. So, it is needed to have modern centralized initiatives which can bring transparency and accountability in the system. In the digitized era, it is obvious that the progress of any government depends on the utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) in the form of E-Governance. In fact, the efficiency and the success of a government can be understood by the reach of electronic governance to its citizens. The study is based on secondary data, specifically published data. All the data utilized in the research are collected from various publications of the central, state are local governments; books, magazines, and newspapers; government reports and publications of various associations connected with the system, and other sources of published information. Based on secondary data, this study tries to find out the obstacles the Indian government has to overcome to implement and utilize the new system, find out the opportunities available and examine the challenges encountered by it. In this digitized society, e-governance is no doubt a better method of governance, but due to the socio-economic condition of the country, it needs some supportive program to make it successful.
