ABSTRACT

The rise of smartphones and the role of Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube, etc.) have brought about concerns over the mental health, well-being and happiness of the Children and Young People, CYP (2-12 years old) population. The rise in the use of so-called smart devices, with some people reportedly using these for up to 8 hours per day, raises concerns about whether these devices are liberating or inhibiting people's productivity and mental & physical health. The World Happiness Report (2018) surveyed roughly 3,000 respondents from 156 countries, asking them to evaluate their current lives on a scale where 0 represents the worst possible life and 10, the best possible. For the world as a whole, the distribution is normally distributed about the median answer of 5, with the population-weighted mean being 5.264.
