ABSTRACT

By the time the student takes a course in analytical instrumentation, they will have had chemical laboratory safety drilled into them in multiple venues. There is no doubt that, especially in your organic chemistry laboratory courses, you will have had instruction on the proper and safe use of not only reagents and solvents, but also some instruction on the safe handling of instrumentation. Analytical instruments typically utilize computer and microprocessor controls that are electrically powered through built-in power supplies, thus, the required current and voltage needed for the various instrument functions are generated internally by use of the applied power from the laboratory receptacles. Students in the United Kingdom will notice that the plugs are considerably larger than the ones used in the United States. Students may notice some unusual receptacles and fixtures installed in certain hazardous locations.
