ABSTRACT

The school/teacher librarian is sometimes described as the ‘literary map’ and curator of library resources. In other words, the school/teacher librarian has an essential role to play in the development of literacy and other important learning skills, as well as fostering a love for voluntary reading amongst the students. Throughout the world, there are hundreds of different libraries and other organisations which are involved in establishing successful literacy and reading programmes for children and young adults. Managers and practitioners of public library services have an important role to play in terms of ensuring children and young people in the community have the best start in literacy development via reading, and a positive attitude towards lifelong learning. In addition, mobile libraries are able to move to where the needs are greatest, and thereby attract young patrons who may be reluctant to step inside a library building.
