ABSTRACT

Jamie Campbell Naidoo is the Foster-EBSCO Endowed Professor at the School of Library and Information Studies, University of Alabama. In the following interview, Dr. Naidoo discusses the changing roles of children’s service librarians in our society, as well as the importance of teaching children to overcome gender stereotyping via the world of literature. The applications for the programme include heart-breaking stories about school libraries with nonfiction collections from the 1950s or schools whose fiction collection is from the 1980s, ragged and falling apart. Association for Library Service to Children provides professional development opportunities and training as well as resources to help library staff better serve the needs of all children within their communities. Some politicians and the more informed public understand the role of libraries in literacy development and lifelong learning. Librarians have always been a beacon illuminating the importance of information literacy.
