ABSTRACT
This chapter starts with a discussion on the origin and concept of blockchain technology, challenges in building sustainable supply chains and how these challenges can be handled using blockchain technology. It also talks about how the challenges in audits and certification of sustainable practices can be handled using blockchain and the conclusion. Broadly blockchain is classified into three categories—Public blockchain, Private blockchain and Hybrid blockchain. An extensive review of literature has been carried out on blockchain technology, low carbon emission supply chains and the integration of blockchains in the supply chain. Blockchain technology will help in building a sustainable supply chain. It can address the challenges of standardisation in the measurement of carbon emission across supply chains which would help in reducing the overall carbon footprint across the supply chains.
