ABSTRACT

Liposome was discovered earliest in the year 1961 by Dr. Alec Bangham, a British hematologist who tried this delivery system for transporting bioactive substances (hydrophobic therapeutic agents and hydrophilic therapeutic agents) into the human body in a biocompatible manner. The system is well known for decades in effectually delivering the pharmacotherapeutically privileged molecules from natural sources or synthetic drug classes (anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-infective, analgesic, etc.). But, the use of this carrier system for delivering the nutraceutical products and functional food is a relatively new concept, and very limited work has been done so far. The present book chapter successfully highlighted the history, background, classification, production, characterization, stability, role, composition function, beneficial functions, objective, advantages, disadvantages, etc., of the liposomes and their role in delivering the bioactive nutraceutical compounds.
