ABSTRACT

IoT is defined as the connectivity of various things/devices, which can perform specific tasks using the internet. The IoT implementation in the construction industry plays an important role in the successful adoption of IR 4.0 and CPSs. This chapter highlights the role of IoT in the implementation of a successful IR 4.0 system along with CPSs in the construction industry. Moreover, the main key enabling technologies in IoT and CPSs are discussed, benefiting the construction industry, including radio frequency identification, cloud computing, wireless sensor network, big data, and Building Information Modelling. The concept of IoT has also been shared to give readers a broader picture of IoT evolution in the industry. Moreover, a few IoT based applications in the construction industry have also been discussed, highlighting supreme advantages gained under the IR 4.0 umbrella, such as supply chain management, surveying and security, safety management, and structural health monitoring.
