ABSTRACT

Over the past decade, consumers have been spending a major share of their income on cosmetics, cosmeceuticals and nutricosmetics. A combination of cosmetic and cosmeceutical products used in routine can play a significant role in assisting consumers to maintain or restore their skin health. Cosmeceuticals are applied topically given that the epidermal layers of the skin lack blood vessels. Topical applications are considered as a more efficient method for supplying nutrients to the skin, especially to the epidermis. Due to consumers’ demand and sustainability risk, the industry is in a continuous search for new natural ingredients that can be obtained from sustainable and ecological sources. Natural ingredients in cosmetics are popular due to their scientifically proven protective and defensive roles against environmental stress generated from free radicals, reactive oxygen species, reactive nitrogen species and oxidative enzymes.
