ABSTRACT

Text-based data has rapidly increased with the advent of social media, communication software, blogs, and other internet-based platforms in recent years. This has introduced a rich database for researchers in all fields, but should be of particular interest to researchers of startups and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. To help take advantage of this wealth of text-based data, this chapter introduces the field of text analysis and NLP. First, this chapter explains the current uses of text analysis, and how it fits into entrepreneurial research regarding teams, culture, and talent acquisition. Second, this chapter describes the fundamentals of text analysis outlining the basic process and detailing aspects and techniques used throughout that process. Third, this chapter explains how these techniques can be applied to practical cases researchers and entrepreneurs may engage in. Finally, this chapter discusses the options available for novices to begin applying text analysis to their research.
