ABSTRACT

Many researchers have argued, and found empirical support, that both taskwork skills (i.e., technical capabilities) and teamwork skills (i.e., ability to work with a team) are both critical for team performance (e.g., Salas et al., 2008). Teamwork skills are especially important in entrepreneurial and small business environments where teams are working on innovative tasks, with interdisciplinary team members, in uncertain environments, and with dynamic roles and responsibilities. Over the last two years, the world has seen a dramatic increase in the number of virtual teams, which have their own unique set of teamwork skill requirements such as information sharing and cultural intelligence (Carter et al., 2015). At the same time, human-machine teams are beginning to enter the workplace, and will require yet another set of teamwork capabilities, such as perspective taking and cognitive flexibility (Dubrow and Orvis, 2020). This chapter highlights teamwork skills required for effective teamwork processes and performance in diverse, virtual, and human-machine teams. Academic insights and practical guidelines enable organizations to select and train individuals to maximize their teamwork skills in each new teamwork setting.
