ABSTRACT

In recent years, smart home devices have become increasingly popular among homeowners. The smart lock is one of the smart home devices whose market size has increased significantly. A smart lock is a smart device that utilizes IoT-enabled sensors to enable keyless entry to residential and commercial facilities. Unlike its counterpart, the traditional lock, the smart lock can be operated remotely using a smartphone to unlock doors. In addition, smart locks come with a wide range of additional features and functionalities that traditional locks lack. However, due to their unique installation location within the home, it’s crucial to thoroughly investigate their security and privacy. In this chapter, we present a review of the literature that investigates the security and privacy concerns related to smart locks as well as the mitigation strategies proposed to deal with those concerns. This review takes into consideration the perspective of the researchers, based on their analysis of the security and privacy of smart locks, as well as the perspective of end users of smart home devices, based on their day-to-day experience with smart home devices.
