ABSTRACT

In Mexico, many plants are used to treat the symptoms caused by diabetes. In this document, the result of an exhaustive survey, 100 plants used in Mexico as a diabetes treatment are reported; however, only 59 have more overt information such as part used, method of preparation, effect, and site of action. The parts most used therapeutically are the leaves, followed by the fruits, aerial parts, the root, flowers, seeds, the whole plant, among others, while the most widely used form of preparation is infusion. The site of action reported for most plants is α-glucosidase. Finally, although many plants have in-depth studies conducted on them in relation to diabetes, 57% of them still need to be analyzed.
