ABSTRACT

The goal of this chapter is to compile and organise the different characteristics, technologies, and facilitating factors related to smart manufacturing. This covers other initiatives such as Industry 4.0, cyber-physical production systems, smart factories, intelligent manufacturing, and digital manufacturing, all of which are often used interchangeably with digital manufacturing. This chapter compiles a complete list of such features, technologies that are usually linked with smart manufacturing. Despite its benefits, the digitisation of sectors poses several issues, including data availability, data storage, analysis, and security. High-speed connectivity, security, and protection all need to be considered. Challenges to the industrial setting include a variety of security issues, including the possibility of a data breach. This chapter investigates the prospects, constraints, and future scope of technology associated with Industry 4.0.
