ABSTRACT

The ever-increasing demand for low cost, high quality products has forced the manufacturing industries to develop and adopt advanced practices in planning, control, and decision-making in traditional machining. The research in this domain has transformed traditional machining into intelligent machining that is capable of manufacturing low cost and high quality products at faster production rates. This chapter describes, reviews, and discusses recent trends in intelligent machining. It is divided into three interrelated sections, i.e. machine tools, cutting tools, and techniques. The machine tools section is focused on intelligent machine tools used in intelligent machining. Intelligent machine tools are workhorses in modern machining technologies and are prominent in intelligent machining. Cutting tools mainly refer to smart cutting tools and their real-time condition monitoring in intelligent machining. The techniques section focuses on soft computing techniques and assisted optimisation techniques used in intelligent machining. Finally, the chapter summarises the development trends in intelligent machine tools, cutting tools, and optimisation techniques. Further research is needed in the domain of intelligent machining to develop systems based on the industrial internet of things to improve the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of machining processes.
