ABSTRACT

Power electronic (PE) systems for various applications have gone through several stages of development during the last five decades. Its development, especially in high power density, has been significantly accelerated from the late 1980s. In addition to the high power density of converters, efficiency, cost, and operating temperature of converters have also become key factors in miniaturization of power converters. This chapter presents the contributions made in recent years in the domain involving high power density converter technologies that have envisaged in the miniaturization of power sources for various applications. Diversified and advanced technologies which are inclined to achieve compact and light (high power density) converters are described along with their layouts and structures. A glimpse into the future based on the current advanced technological trend is offered.
