ABSTRACT

The healthcare system of any country plays a significant role in the quality of life, improves the life expectancy of its citizens, and is primarily influenced by economic and social factors. Healthcare access and quality index indicates that India, the second-largest population in the world with steadily increasing medically challenged population, is positioned far behind at 145 out of 195 countries. This underlines a definite need for establishing a better healthcare management ecosystem to serve the masses.

This chapter proposes various methodologies for the design and development of remote healthcare systems. These methodologies are based on data science and artificial intelligence (AI), Cloud technologies, and also suggest leveraging the IoT-enabled medical data capturing through sensors, in addition to the location tracking and Cloud-based secured data storage mechanism.

Further, it also presents a case study that is implemented using some of the proposed methodologies. The mobile application depicted in the case study provides a one-stop solution for connecting the healthcare ecosystem through a single portal, thereby minimizing the physical movement of patients, in addition to the reduction in cost and treatment time. The application uses Google firebase Cloud services and also provides machine learning–based disease prediction and features like online consultation, locating the nearest medical facility, and emergency services.
