ABSTRACT

India's expertise in cloud computing is the handle of global growth for her agriculture. However, the actual leveraging of the cloud computing technology in the field of agriculture is inspiring, to say the least. Cloud computing is evolving nowadays as a business setup that removes the necessity to maintain costly software and hardware, storage, network, and computing resources for the use of business. Cloud computing is a novel concept that offers various services over the Internet to businesses on a pay-as-you-go mode by keeping a track of business use of resources from a common pool of configurable storage devices, networking devices, servers, facilities and software, and invoicing business accordingly. In the current cloud computing environment, the technology and software tools are very useful to maintain a central database of all farming crops (associated to soils, weather conditions, research, crops, farmers, agricultural promotion, composts and knowledge on pesticides) in the cloud. This chapter discusses the compute model, qualities, execution prototype, cloud facility prototype, cloud benefits and challenges of cloud computing in the farming field.
