ABSTRACT

Nature is designed with different materials, from rock to living beings, and we humans are a cluster of unique materials. This chapter is structured to provide the different applications of an interesting polymer material known as ionic polymer–metal composites (IPMCs). IPMCs are a part of electroactive polymers (EAPs), which are now widely used in engineering, science and technology. Researchers around the globe are showing deep interest due to its applicability in different applications such as actuators and sensors. Biomedical engineering, materials science, robotics, underwater applications and medical science are few of the major application areas of IPMCs. For example, the manipulation of an object is an important issue in any industrial application. In an industry, different tools and techniques are assembled for handling macro- or soft objects. These tools also involve conventional grippers that are used as robot end effector.
