ABSTRACT

This study investigated students’ historical empathy in the classroom. A total of 146 upper secondary school students were randomly selected to participate in a survey on historical empathy. The recorded Cronbach’s alpha coefficient values ranged from 0.848 to 0.863, which reaffirmed the reliability of the measuring instrument in this study. The levels of historical empathy based on historical figures and events were analysed using IBM SPSS (version 24.0). Overall, the students’ level of historical empathy was at a lower level. The results further revealed low levels of historical empathy based on historical figure (M = 2.67, SD = 0.50) and event (M = 2.51, SD = 0.53). Hence, it is essential for teachers to change their teaching strategies by focusing on historical empathy in history education.
