ABSTRACT

Goal orientation, a patterned value which leads individual into various ways of working, can predict student’s performance and learning success in education. Thus, assessing student’s goal orientation is important. Unfortunately, even though there is lots of research in developing goal orientation scales in others countries, it is a bit difficult to find one in Indonesia. The aim of research was to develop goal orientation scale using a ranking type. This study involved 346 students of Yogyakarta State University, consisting of 63 male students and 283 female students. The data collection used of multistage random sampling. The goal-orientation scale in the study was developed based on the results of the previous studies which had translated the goal-orientation scale from Was into Indonesian. Goal orientation is divided into four dimensions, namely mastery orientation, performance-approach with focus on comparing ability, performance-approach with focus on proving ability, and avoidant goal orientation. The instrument was made by using a ranking type, and each item consisted of three statements showing three dimensions of goal orientation. Exploratory factor analysis supported that the items were grouped according to the theoretical concept referred, so the validity of the construct was met. The resulting scale has quite good psychometric properties with the reliability for each dimension ranging from 0.622-0.895.
