ABSTRACT

Blockchain technology shows a lot of potential and can be used to create solutions across multiple domains. The coming sections in this chapter discuss a few of its applications that can revolutionize current practices prevalent in cities. This chapter reviews use cases that have already been suggested and explores how these use cases can be applied to create distributed solutions for Smart Cities. The use cases of Blockchain are many and therefore this paper should not be considered an exhaustive list of applications of Blockchain to Smart Cities. The use cases suggested here mostly consist of solutions having electrical sensors connected to each other over a network and each one of them acts as a node on the Blockchain or a utility to help facilitate other nodes on the Blockchain. When used together, electrical systems and Blockchain technology form a powerful combination much like the Internet of Things (IoT) with the exception that rather than the internet or a local area network, it operates over a peer-to-peer network forming a Blockchain.
