ABSTRACT

The advancement in food packaging has resulted in much cutting-edge research, ultimately resulting in the development of new products which are efficient and sustainable in nature and beneficial to humans. One such application is the utilization of nanotubes in the development of effective packaging. Food packaging made up of nanotubes is found to be useful in effectively protecting the food from different internal and external environmental factors. Depending upon the type, single- or multi-walled, carbon nanotubes can be utilized for packaging purposes. Fibers, films, or biocomposites developed from nanotubes for packaging of different food products extends the foods' shelf life and preserves the nutrients, and also protects the food products from possible degradation. This chapter focuses on the application of nanotubes in the development of effective and sustainable food packaging, including utilization of single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, and also the use of titanium dioxide, halloysite, and graphene for the development of different nanotubes. It also discusses the development and application of biodegradable and eco-friendly carbon nanotubes in food packaging, as well as its possible drawbacks.
