ABSTRACT

The dairy industry is one of the largest in the food industry, producing a diverse range of products including milk, milk powder, butter, and cheese. Meanwhile, every year, approximately 4 to 11 million tonnes of dairy waste are released into the environment worldwide, and approximately 275 million tonnes of dairy waste water annually in India. Dairy waste is the most complex natural material in terms of its biodegradation. All the waste is dumped into our environment without any treatment. Ultimately, pollution is occurring, and the health of our mother nature is going to deteriorate. This book chapter reveals the different treatment processes (physical, chemical, and biological) so that dairy waste may be converted into useful products. Still, a lot of studies should be conducted on both the application of anaerobic and aerobic treatment along with physico-chemical treatment for dairy waste management.
