ABSTRACT

The purpose of boosting production yield is for effective enhancement in agriculture through the application of synthetic chemicals. The chemicals used in pesticides are however highly toxic and have deleterious consequences when they accumulate in the environment or their residues come in contact with the body’s system. Biosensors provide a convenient method for assessing and tracking pesticides in atmospheric and food matrices. The use of biosensors as screening instruments is economical and minimizes the number of samples to be tested by the aforementioned conventional laboratory techniques. Therefore, this chapter intends to provide a general over view on the application of toxic as sensors and biosensors for the degrading toxic pesticides by gas/biosensors. Specific examples of these biosensors that are normally applied in the environmental and food sector are also highlighted.
