ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter aims to explain the key principles of behavioural biology as they relate to the care and management of zoo and aquarium-housed animals. Key behavioural ecology theories are explained, including Tinbergen’s Four Questions, and are related back to the practicalities of constructing husbandry regimes for exotic, wild animals under human care. Examples of species differences, with regards to their behavioural responses, to the captive environment, are provided to illustrate the importance of wild data and knowledge of evolutionary history and ecological needs to zoo animal management. An explanation of how behavioural biology can be applied across the activities of the modern zoo and aquarium is outlined, to lead into the upcoming topic-specific chapters of the book.
