ABSTRACT

Conservation education is a core principle of the purpose, function, and role of any good modern aquarium or zoo. As bastions of ex-situ conservation, how conservation education is delivered, and who to, is the keystone to the future of the industry, the survival of species, and behaviour changes are integral to the central mission of a more sustainable and biodiverse future. An understanding of the behavioural biology of aquarium and zoo animals not only boosts their well-being, but it is a useful tool for disseminating engaging, ethical, and equitable conservation education. This empathetic practice can craft conservation education into a seminal influence over a more sustainable future by placing the natural world at the centre of concern.
