ABSTRACT

Counterion binding in polyion systems is of fundamental importance in various fields of science and has long been studied from both theoretical and practical points of view. Due to the lack of a generalized treatment, the macroscopic binding equilibrium data compiled up to the present are not fully related to the reactions at the molecular level. Establishment of a unified analytical treatment of the ion-binding equilibria of the linear and cross-linked linear polyion systems is required. A Gibbs-Donnan concept has been proposed by Marinsky and his coworkers for the interpretation of counterion binding equilibria to linear and cross-linked linear polyions.
