ABSTRACT

This chapter reports the substance of the operational system and performance evaluation studies to which Generic Intelligent Driver Support (GIDS) has been subjected thus far. In the third year of the GIDS project evaluation studies were carried out to evaluate the impact of the prototype system with a view to safety, effectiveness, and impact on driver behaviour and workload. A system, such as GIDS, which contains so many new elements in so many new combinations, must be put to the test in as many ways as feasible before it can truthfully be offered as something of value to the driving population. A reasonable conviction must emerge that GIDS performs adequately in the situations for which it was designed and that a positive contribution to efficiency and safety can be expected. The essential comparison is therefore the one between the different GIDS conditions and their interactions with age and experience.
