ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a systematic treatment of guidelines for each of these major functions in Generic Intelligent Driver Support, also frequently referred to as applications. When travelling in a partly or totally unfamiliar environment, drivers require information in order to reach their destination. In a highly familiar environment it may happen that they do not know which route is quickest, given the current traffic situation. Sophisticated navigation systems in the car usually select a route between an origin and a destination. Optimization on distance is the most frequently used alternative. In that case, distance is the only attribute of the route taken into consideration by the route-selection algorithm. The way the route is selected and the attributes taken into account during the route-selection process are of great importance. A human being has five input channels to the internal and external environment: visual, auditory, tactile, kinaesthetic, and olfactory/gustatory.
