ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews HPLC methodology developed for the analysis of the glycosphingolipids and phospholipids, which are ubiquitious components of biological membranes. The isolation and measurement of glycosphingolipids and phospholipids are essential for many studies on complex biological systems. Neutral glycosphingolipids and ganglioside fractions can be resolved into individual components by TLC. Modern HPLC technology provides the potential for rapid and highly sensitive methods for the separation and analysis of lipids. The chapter describes the HPLC techniques and instrumentation used for the preparative isolation and quantitative analysis of glycosphingolipids and phospholipids. It describes selected methods for specific separation and/or analysis. The chapter presents the current status of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometric methods for the analysis of glycosphingolipids and phospholipids.
