ABSTRACT

This paper, based on the authors publications, describes the prediction methods of traffic induced vibrations and the mitigation procedures. Special interest is focused on the so-called low frequency vibrations. First, the prediction method is presented in view of the wave propagation in ground from traffic. The dispersive nature in the layered soils is detected for identifying the wave predominance. Then, by using thus obtained knowledge, the wave impeding barriers (WIB) are developed. The basic idea is to shift the cut-off frequency for wave propagation in field. Herein, illustrations are demonstrated for the honeycomb shaped WIB when considered around the viaduct pier or on field off the viaduct. An innovative active control procedure is also briefly introduced.
