ABSTRACT

The paper describes the installation and testing of the PANDROL VANGUARD rail fastening system on Guangzhou Metro Line 1 in China. The system is designed to reduce the level of vibration transmitted from the rail into the ground. The fasteners were installed in a tunnel under a sensitive residential area in place of the existing rail fasteners. Measurements of deflection of the track and vibration in the tunnel and at the surface were made for normal service trains before and after the new fasteners were installed. The measurements show that a significant reduction in vibration level on the track and at the surface were achieved when the PANDROL VANGUARD fasteners were installed. Vibration acceleration levels decreased by 15.6 dB on the tunnel floor, and by 11.0 dB on the surface above the tunnel as the result of the installation of the PANDROL VANGUARD system.
