ABSTRACT

Committee activities on environmental vibration in Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) are reviewed on the basis of all proceedings of annual symposia on environmental vibration in buildings and related publications or reports in AIJ. Committee activities over two decades are summarized on the following points: the objective and scope of the committee, the sources, transmission path and receivers in environmental vibration, measurement procedures, vibration prediction methods, performance evaluation, countermeasures such as vibration control and mitigation, and a role of environmental vibration in performance-based design. Emphasis is placed on AIJ guidelines on environmental vibration in buildings. A future perspective of committee activities is also presented.
