ABSTRACT

Across Europe the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) offers new challenges. The Directive builds on, and encourages environmental improvement but also represents a 'step change' in the management of the water environment. Involving people in all stages of the planning and implementation of the Directive is key to delivery. Results from trials in the Ribble Pilot River Basin provide an insight into river basin planning for the Water Framework Directive whilst supporting the development of European best practice and sharing lessons learned.
