ABSTRACT

An important part of the drinking water supply in the Barcelona's Metropolitan Area depends on the scarce, heavily modified water resources of the Llobregat River. The Sant Joan Despí Waterworks treats simultaneously both surface and groundwater in order to achieve the best possible quality of the final drinking water, therefore reaching at least the characteristics that have been set up in the Drinking Water Directive (DWD), The implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), with additional and somewhat unclear monitoring requirements, may be very complex and costly.
