ABSTRACT

Extensive research has been carried out on triangulation techniques for height fields, mainly for flight simulators and geographical information systems. The method starts with a data matrix, which is later converted to multi-resolution form using wavelets defined on the Haar basis. The images are rendered according to two pre-established parameters: texture detail and geometry detail. The LOD management was tested using an elevation matrix of 512 x 256 points and a texture of the same size with a resolution of 16 bits per pixel. The maximum output rate of the hardware used is very small, about 6000 textured polygons per second. Another main difference between the method presented and that of Lindstrom is that all the terrain data around the user is considered, and not just that in the field of view.
